About Northwest Garden Nursery
Northwest Garden Nursery began in a small way in 1992, open only by appointment. We had begun propagating and growing plants to use in our landscaping business. It was difficult to find the plants that we wanted to use locally, and mail ordered plants were usually tiny, so we started growing our own. Of course, we eventually had too many, so our friend Roger Gossler suggested that we open by appointment to sell the surplus.
Over the next few years we downsized the landscape maintenance business and increased the nursery business. We offered mainly herbaceous perennials and just a few trees and shrubs that we found particularly attractive.
At about the same time we began dabbling in hellebore breeding, having obtained some good hellebore seed from Will McLewin in the UK and Gisela Schmiemann in Germany. We then serious upgraded our hellebore breeding operation with a trip to England and Holland, bringing back first-rate breeding stock from Ashwood Nursery, Blackthorn Nursery, and de Hessenhof, many of which are the venerable ancestors of our own breeding efforts.
Finally, after many enjoyable and busy years of selling retail here at the nursery and at many area plant sales, we decided that we needed to concentrate our efforts toward our main love of creating and providing hybrid hellebores of superior quality to wholesale nurseries, as well as to our customers here at Northwest Garden Nursery.
Hellebore Open Garden Days
For many years now, we have had a Hellebore Open Garden Days event here at the nursery in February at which people can come to see hellebores growing in the garden and purchase them in bloom. Please sign up below if you’d like to attend!
